Series Summary:
In this sermon series, we will explore the deep and transformative power of returning to our true home in God. Based on the parable of the prodigal son, we will see how God’s heart is always open to us, no matter how far we’ve wandered. Each week, we will delve into the themes of grace, forgiveness, and the joy of reconciliation, discovering how God’s love welcomes us back home.
Theme Scripture:
Luke 15:31-32
Week 1

Week 1: “Lost but Not Forgotten”

  • Scripture: Luke 15:11-24
  • Introduction: Begin the series by discussing the parable of the prodigal son, focusing on the younger son’s journey. Highlight the feeling of being lost and the deep human need for belonging.
  • Key Points:
    • The Allure of the World: How the younger son was drawn away from home by the allure of the world, only to find emptiness and regret.
    • The Moment of Realization: The significance of the prodigal son’s realization in the pigpen and his decision to return home.
    • God’s Unfailing Memory: Emphasize that even when we stray, God never forgets us. His heart is always turned toward us, waiting for our return.
  • Application: Encourage the congregation to identify areas in their lives where they’ve wandered and to take the first steps back towards God.
  • Closing Prayer: A prayer for those feeling lost, asking God to guide them back home.

Week 2: “A Father’s Heart”

  • Scripture: Luke 15:20-24
  • Introduction: This week focuses on the father’s response to the prodigal son’s return, highlighting the nature of God’s love and grace.
  • Key Points:
    • Compassion in Action: The father didn’t wait for his son to grovel; he ran to meet him. God’s love is active, not passive.
    • Unconditional Acceptance: The father’s embrace and immediate acceptance of the son represents God’s unconditional love for us, no matter our past.
    • Restoration and Celebration: The father’s decision to restore the son’s status and celebrate his return shows how God rejoices when we come back to Him.
  • Application: Challenge the congregation to reflect on the depth of God’s love and to accept His forgiveness, no matter where they’ve been.
  • Closing Prayer: A prayer of thanksgiving for God’s relentless love and grace.

Week 3: “The Bitter Brother”

  • Scripture: Luke 15:25-30
  • Introduction: In this sermon, shift the focus to the older brother, who struggled with bitterness and jealousy upon his brother’s return.
  • Key Points:
    • The Danger of Self-Righteousness: The older brother believed his faithfulness entitled him to more, highlighting the dangers of self-righteousness and entitlement in our spiritual lives.
    • Missing the Joy of Grace: The older brother’s bitterness kept him from experiencing the joy of his brother’s return. Sometimes, our own hard hearts prevent us from celebrating others’ victories.
    • God’s Grace for All: God’s grace is not earned; it is freely given. The father’s words, “You are always with me, and everything I have is yours,” remind us that we are already blessed.
  • Application: Encourage the congregation to examine their hearts for any lingering bitterness and to embrace the fullness of God’s grace.
  • Closing Prayer: A prayer for release from jealousy and bitterness, and for the joy of grace to fill every heart.

Week 4: “Home Again”

  • Scripture: Luke 15:31-32
  • Introduction: Conclude the series by focusing on the joy of being “home” in God’s love and community, emphasizing the celebration and restoration that comes with returning to God.
  • Key Points:
    • The Invitation to Joy: The father’s invitation to celebrate reminds us that God’s kingdom is a place of joy and festivity, not condemnation.
    • Living as Sons and Daughters: Explore what it means to live as fully restored children of God, walking in the freedom and love that comes from being home.
    • A Home for All: God’s house is big enough for everyone. As we experience His love, we are also called to extend that invitation to others.
  • Application: Challenge the congregation to live out their faith as beloved children of God and to extend God’s welcome to others who are lost.
  • Closing Prayer: A prayer of commitment to live in the joy and freedom of being home with God, and to help others find their way home.
